How A Digital Video Recorder Works

A digital video recorder is in a fact a hard drive. Hard drives are used to record images, data, music, you name it. In this case, we are recording live television to watch a later date and time. Perhaps you need to use the bathroom and cannot miss a minute of the show you are watching. Well this hard drive we give a fancy name to, the digital video recorder, is just the thing that we are looking for. The digital video recorder is connected to our television or outside sources by the normal RCA cable in use today.

A digital video recorder can be complicated to understand so I am going to try and make it as simple as possible here. All digital video recorders (most anyway), have some sort of tuner built into them. This could be built in through a satellite, cable, or some sort of antenna that you have. The signal comes in and is converted to a digital format. This way it is compressed and is used at a much cleaner and faster rate. Next, the signal is going to go to the DVR unit itself, then back to a decoder so it can be displayed on your television.

A digital video recorder does not use any kind of tape to record. This is why we call it a hard drive. You can almost think of it as some sort of external USB device which you would use as an extra storage device. Does that make it any better? This tool is a lot different from a VCR because a VCR records to an actual tape. A digital video recorder records the information to itself, it its own hard drive. For those that never have a blank tape to record on, or if that used to be you, then you may appreciate DVR a lot more than other people do.

When a recorder is advertised it should be noted that most machines are advertised with a certain number of hours that they can record for. Another way of putting that is to say the recording time of the machine. Most machines are advertised at a rate of recording with the lower possible quality setting. What does this mean? If you want to record a program on high quality you will not have as many hours to record.

Digital video recorders give us one major advantage over anything before. We can control how and when we want to see something. Just like the DVD player was a major advance over the VCR, so to is the DVR recorder over the VCR recorder. You see, a VCR must finish recording something before you can watch it. A DVR recorder does not have to finish before you can watch it. You can view the program while you watch it. It seems complex until you use the device.

One of the main selling points for this device was not film, movies, or sports. The DVR really had a huge success because of its ability to pause the television as you watch it. This is a brand new concept which has really taken the digital world by storm. Now everyone wants to have a digital video recorder in their home to record any show they might have missed.
